Welcome to the first in-depth lesson

Hopefully you had a great set of discussions this last week and now have a better understanding of how you are perceived in your organization. Today we will start our first formal lesson: understanding how to elevate your thinking and approach your job from the level above you (or from the CEO’s vantage point).

! NOTE TAKING IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED !

I highly recommend that you take notes while watching these videos and then revisit those notes in the future. Research has shown that note-taking + follow-up review can increase your retention by 50% or more.

Lesson 1:
Thinking like your boss (or the CEO)

Time to complete: 1 week

Assignment Step 1

Do a retrospective of a project or initiative you recently completed and ask yourself

  • What knowledge / skills / business context would have allowed you to do that job more effectively in retrospect?

  • Are you approaching this project from the individual lens or from the broader lens of your manager / the CEO? What would you have done differently if you had used that broader perspective?

  • For your past projects/work assignments, have you approached them with a Business First mindset? How would you approach these assignments differently after having watched this lesson?

Assignment Step 2

Apply this lesson to a current / active assignment you are working on

  • Define the knowledge / skills / business context that you need in order to attack this assignment with a higher-level perspective.

  • Find the 20% time to go close whatever capability or knowledge gap you identified in the bullet above.

  • Take that elevated perspective, mix in a ‘solve for business first’ mindset, and see how it changes the way you are approaching your assignment.
