Welcome to the seventh lesson

Today we reset your thinking around ‘what work actually is’ by expanding its definition to include communicating about the underlying work in a way that not only benefits the business but builds your own personal brand.

! NOTE TAKING IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED !

I highly recommend that you take notes while watching these videos and then revisit those notes in the future. Research has shown that note-taking + follow-up review can increase your retention by 50% or more.

Lesson 7:
Up, Down, Across Communication

Time to complete: 1 week

Assignment Step 1

Apply the lessons you learned in this session retroactively to a past project or accomplishment

  • Think about a significant project or initiative where you believe you didn’t communicate effectively about the work

  • Go through the mental exercise of how you would have approached that project differently (armed with the knowledge from this lesson)

  • Think through all aspects: who would you be communicating with, how would you reframe the message as learnings, how would you tailor the communication to different audiences, etc?

Assignment Step 2

Apply the lessons you learned in this session to an existing active project on a moving forward basis

  • Pick a current project or initiative where you can apply these tactics moving forward

  • Define your communication plan and run that plan past the proposed stakeholders

  • Get those up/down/across communication flows started

Assignment Step 3 (bonus)

Identify an area where you can begin a recurring communication update (if applicable)

  • Identify an area where you can set-up a recurring communication update

  • Define your communication plan and run that plan past the stakeholders

  • Incorporate this update into your definition of ‘the work’ that needs to be done
