Welcome to the first step of a very important journey

I am so excited that you have decided to join us on this career growth journey. You aren’t going to regret it. As a start, please watch this first lesson video. You’ll learn a lot more about what to expect over the next 10 weeks, will be introduced to a very important talent and development framework, and you’ll receive your very first real-world “muscle-building” assignment.

! NOTE-TAKING IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED !

I highly recommend that you take notes while watching these videos and then revisit those notes in the future. Research has shown that note-taking + follow-up review can increase your retention by 50% or more.

Course kick-off:
The three talent dimensions

Time to complete: 1 week

Assignment Step 1

Perform your own self-assessment of how you think you stack up against the three different elements of the talent framework at a high level. Ask yourself:

  • Do I have the capabilities and skills to do my job effectively?

  • What am I missing that is preventing me from being more effective?

  • Where do I have capabilities and skills that are far superior to my peers? (These are your strengths, and we’ll come back to them in subsequent courses).

Assignment Step 2

Have three discussions with peers or co-workers in current or past organizations that you have worked in. Ask them what they believe the perceptions are of you within the organization in terms of the three talent dimensions.

Assignment Step 3

Have three discussions with individuals who are one (or more) levels higher than you in the organization. This can be in your current or past organizations. Ask them what perceptions, if any, they have of you against the three Talent dimensions (Core Capabilities, Being Energy Accretive, delivering Real Impact). Some probing questions you can ask include:

  • What is your current perception of my strengths and areas of improvement in term of my skills and capabilities?

  • How would you describe your perception of my impact (positive or negative) on the broader organization?

  • When you hear my name, are you able to associate any real business ‘wins’ to my name?

Assignment Step 4

Finally, write down the summary of your thoughts and those conversations. We will revisit them throughout the course and in the next session.
